Trimming long hair may seem like you're defeating the purpose of growing it out, but remember, those ends have been around for quite some time, so chop off 1.5 to 2.5 cm every six weeks or so to keep hair looking healthy.
The trend in long hair now is perimeter layering--layers sparingly cut in around the face and on the ends for softness.
When it comes to talking to your stylist about going short, though, there's more to the conversation. Consider this:
- Do you want your ears to show or stay covered?
- What about bangs?
- Do you want the overall shape to be soft and round, or highly textured and piecey (best cut with a razor rather than scissors)?
- consider your face shape as the best short hair style can look the most ugly on you if it does go with your face
- consider how are you going to maintain after each wash
- consider the practicality of your haircut considering your working and social surroundings.
- Consider your general styling and how your hair cut should go with your fashion & style and not against it.
And even if you go for a no-daily-maintenance short do, you're not completely off the hook--frequent trims are a must.
