What you need to know for do-it-yourself success
Whether you want to cover gray, get a new look, or add some brightness to your face, hair color is a great way to experiment.

The great news is that home hair-color can look just as great as salon color -- if you follow these rules:
- Rule 1: Stick close to your shade. Colorists recommend you color only one to two shades lighter or darker than your natural hue. Keeping within your natural shade range minimizes the possibility of mistakes.
- Rule 2 : Color your hair according to your skin color . Keep in mind that sometimes it's not a major change you need, but just some highlights or lowlights.
- Rule 3 : The color on the box is just to give you an idea. Your results may vary greatly if your hair color is different than the model's natural hair color. So before buying a hair color , Do The Math to be able to choose the right color to buy which will give you the desired results .
- Rule 4 : For lifting the hair's natural color beyond a few shades - such as turning dark brown hair blonde - you'll want to purchase a double-process blonding kit, which includes a lightener (bleach) for removing the hair's natural color, so a lighter shade can be applied. But If you want to go blond safely , head to the salon. Lightening dark hair is tricky, and takes expert technique to achieve good results.
- Rule 5: Do the patch test. Even if you've been coloring for years, follow the product's instructions on doing a patch test every time. Allergies to hair-color chemicals can develop at any time, leaving you with an itchy rash or burned scalp. It's worth testing for allergic reaction prior to using a coloring product. So Dab a little color behind your ears or on the inside of your forearm and wait 48 hours to see if your skin breaks out.
- Rule 6 : Do a strand test before coloring your hair. It's the only way to be sure how it will turn out. A good trick: collect a few days' worth of hair from your hairbrush, then bond one end with tape and test it.
- Rule 7: a week Before you color your hair, make sure to really condition the ends so that they don't absorb too much color during the process. The reason? The ends of your hair are usually the most porous and have a tendency to really soak up color.
